Parents of Horizon Middle School student committed suicide to push for change

MOORHEAD – Mark Jones joined his family and dozens of others at Horizon Middle School on the night of Friday, October 29 to remember his 13-year-old son who committed suicide.

About 45 minutes into the silent candlelight vigil for 13-year-old Jacoby Blake, his father broke that silence with a message he will push for change.

“I’m honored to be his father, I’m grateful to be his father, he meant so much to me, so much to us,” Jones said.

The emotional night outside Horizon Middle School as around 50 people of all ages held candles to remember a boy who brightened their lives.

An 8th grader who wanted to spread kindness, who liked to laugh and joke and who had big dreams. Jacoby was working on his lifeguard certification so that he could purchase his own basketball shoes to achieve his goal of someday playing in the NBA.

“Be nice to people because you might not get the chance to do it again,” Jones said.

His father shared their devastation 10 days ago … when 13-year-old Jacoby Blake committed suicide. He is survived by his parents and twin brother Jalen

“I was there when he left, we were there when he left,” Jones said.

While he couldn’t save his son’s life, Jacoby’s father made a promise to the community.

“… that no other child dies at 13 from mental illness, from depression, anxiety, stress, peer pressure, bullying, nothing at all that, ”Jones said.

Jacoby’s father said his son struggled during the pandemic for help. It was online rather than in person.

“When a kid says I need help, we have to ask for help immediately, not next week when there is an opening, not tomorrow, but today,” Jones said.

Before leaving, the group said the Lord’s Prayer before saying a good night which could be heard above – to a life lost too soon, but to a boy who will forever remain in their hearts.

Jacoby’s parents asked everyone to say a prayer for Jacoby Joseph Blake. A service for Jacoby will be held at Boulger Funeral Home on Saturday October 30 at 2 p.m.
